With Anya and Tania

Sisters Anya and Tania of the local jewelry brand Zaaya.

I had the most fun time last year photographing these two sisters — Anya and Tania — the ones behind the local jewelry brand called Zaaya. I am always looking to photograph local creatives (yet another way, attempt rather, for me to be part of the creative world), and I found Zaaya the way I find most of my artist subjects — through Etsy!

It was the most interesting, and so much fun! Tania just happened to be pregnant at the time. I have never before photographed a pregnant lady at her trimester. I had no idea what I was doing! Don’t get me wrong guys, but I get freaked out by pregnant women. I am always thinking and expecting the worse… like, what would happen if she went into labor while shooting? Or, what if she trips? Or, is she feeling OK? Does she need to eat something, or drink something may be? May be she needs to go to the bathroom? I know my subject’s pregnancy has nothing to do with me, but at the time when I was photographing her, I was as tense and fidgety as if I were somehow related to the mother and the unborn baby and as if their wellbeing were my responsibility… I’m not trying to make myself sound like a creep here, really. I AM MOST DEFINITELY NOT! But well… that’s just me around soon-to-be-mommies. Can’t help it.

On the day of the shoot, we went all the way to Golden, Colorado. It’s a small little mountain town with all sorts of mountain town goodness. Weird mountain people, small mountain cafes, unique mountain buildings and shops and stores, and of course, mountains! This town isn’t that far, only a 40 minute-ish drive from Denver, and yet, it feels like I’ve gone to a whole new place…

We went around the small downtown area, which is basically three blocks that one can walk around in minutes, and tried to find interesting spots for the photos. Unfortunately, I ran into some issues that particular morning, and was way late! The sun was up over our heads and it was difficult in the sunny state of Colorado to get any good shots out in the open with the sun glaring down at us. But still, I think I got in a few decent ones.

The two sisters are really close. I could see it the first time I met them at a cafe, when I went to talk to them about the photo shoot. So, on the day of the actual shoot, I tried my best to bring out their sisterly love and affection. Not sure how successful I was, but hey, I tried!

These sisters make amazing silver jewelries that you can find on their Etsy shop. Give it a look-up when you have some time!
